This is an exhaustively researched and very well-written account with a misleading title as the “Jungle of Stone” only occupies part of the more than 500 pages. What we have here are the biographies of John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood, of their “outsized lives” and times. A great companion to the original books. Carlsen adds news of the times, adding retrospective context to anchor Stephens and Catherwood in a broader world history. He also uses a more contemporary writing style, which may be more palatable to modern readers, but don't neglect the original works.They are some of the best travel-adventure writing ever!
